Research-Affirmed Treatment for Patriots

At Hanley Center, we honor the profound sacrifices of veterans and first responders. The brave men and women in these high-stress roles are particularly vulnerable to mental health issues and substance use disorders. This vulnerability is why we are committed to supporting them through our Patriots Initiative.

Our goal is to offer a safe, understanding, and compassionate environment where our nation’s heroes can begin to heal through trauma-informed, effective mental health and addiction treatment for first responders and veterans.

Understanding The Challenges of Our Nation’s Heroes

Veterans and first responders put their lives on the line every day to protect the citizens of the United States of America. This commitment, however, often comes at a significant cost: substance use disorders, and mental health issues due to occupational trauma.

Consider these alarming statistics:
• Approximately 5.2 million veterans experienced a behavioral health condition in 2020.
• 90% of veterans and first responders experiencing a substance use disorder did not receive treatment.
• 85% of first responders report symptoms related to depression.
• 69% of EMS professionals do not have enough time to recover between traumatic events due to the high pace of work.
• Nearly 30% of all first responders develop a behavioral health condition.
• 14% to 16% of the U.S. service members deployed to Afghanistan and Iraq have been affected by PTSD or depression.
• First responders develop PTSD at rates significantly higher (11-20%) than those found in the regular adult population (4%).

These figures underscore the urgent need for specialized behavioral health and addiction treatment for veterans and first responders.

The Patriots Initiative at Hanley Center provides crucial supportive care and behavioral health treatment services. It is specifically designed for first responders, active and retired, veterans, and active-duty military experiencing substance use and/or mental health disorders.

Specialized Treatment Approaches for Mental Health & Addiction

Patients participating in the Patriots Initiative have the dual benefit of engaging age- and gender-specific
treatment in their respective units while also having weekly sessions that are Patriot-specific.

We employ a blend of cognitive-behavioral and trauma-specific therapies, relationship and systemic-based interventions, and traditional psychotherapy, along with pharmacological treatments, including:

• Private medical detoxification (if needed)
• Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT)
• Narrative Exposure Therapy (NET)
• Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR)
• Individual, Group, and Family Therapies

Our 12-Step immersion-based program provides targeted, trauma-informed care to individuals who are
dealing with a substance use disorder and mental health issues stemming from occupation-specific traumatic-stress exposure and traumatic-stress exposure across the lifespan, including acute suicidality.

Who We Treat

We welcome all men and women who serve as first responders, active and retired, active-duty military personnel, and veterans. The Patriots Initiative is designed to address the significant mental and emotional challenges that often accompany service and sacrifice.

Veterans

Veterans returning from combat often experience waves of emotions in response to surviving traumatic events. You may experience anxiety, guilt, anger, PTSD, depression, and difficulties reintegrating into civilian life, leading to problems with substance use.

Law Enforcement

Law enforcement professionals face unique challenges in their line of duty (e.g., high stress, trauma exposure, and the need for constant vigilance). These situations increase your risk of developing PTSD, depression, and substance use disorders.

Fire Fighters

It is common for firefighters to endure traumatic incidents and life-threatening situations. The pressure to protect lives and property can come at the cost of your mental and emotional well-being.

EMT

Emergency Medical Technicians (EMTs) experience critical situations requiring rapid decision-making on nearly every shift. These high stakes demands can erode your emotional and mental health over time.
