Healing for your body, mind, and spirit

Overview
At Origins Behavioral Healthcare, we recognize that addiction impacts the body, mind, and spirit. We provide care that supports the integration of these three areas of life. Our chaplains are available to support adherents of various faith traditions and provide spiritual support throughout your treatment process.
Spirituality in Recovery: A Personalized Approach
Early in your treatment experience, a Spiritual Care Professional will be available to meet with you to assess any current life issues, including “brokenness” and areas of spiritual need or conflict that may be contributing to alcohol and drug use or underlying mental health disorders.
Religious affiliation is not a requirement for Spiritual Care Services or to find a measure of inner peace. Spirituality reminds those struggling with substance use disorders that there are loving forces that are bigger than themselves that can positively impact recovery and sober living.
In partnership with your Primary Counselor and the treatment team, we may add personalized spiritual support to your treatment plan. This may include individual counseling sessions, group activities, spiritual events, and personal interactive experiences to help you move toward healing and wholeness.
Nurturing your spirituality in recovery might also include regular meetings with our full-time Spiritual Care staff.
How Can a Chaplain Help?
Our Chaplain supports patients, families, and staff in addressing the complex spiritual needs which impact recovery from addiction and co-occurring disorders. These needs can include a search for meaning, hope for relationship healing, grief and loss, or the desire for enhanced self-worth and support.
You or your loved ones can call a Chaplain when desiring emotional and spiritual care during the treatment process or having a particular spiritual or religious concern.
A Chaplain is available if you:
- Have questions about spirituality in recovery
- Desire spiritual counseling and ethical consultation
- Are frustrated with the disease process
- Received treatment that has raised important life questions
- Are asking “why” questions
- Have religious/spiritual or cultural concerns affecting your treatment
- Find yourself grieving
- Have discovered new possibilities in your life
- Desire additional support
Spirituality and Addiction: Our Philosophy of Spiritual Care
Our philosophy reflects a strong belief that spirituality is about one’s way of life and reaches deep – beyond religious traditions. Spirituality encompasses a sense of hope, self-worth, and purpose in life, all of which significantly affect your quality of life and sense of wellness.
Spiritual Care for Addiction Treatment and Recovery
Spirituality and addiction are intertwined, and we can help you tap into your spiritual life as a source of healing. Our services and spiritual resources help to promote peace of mind, restore injured relationships, and foster relationships on the journey to recovery.
This ministry is one of comforting presence and unconditional love, which focuses on fostering peace and the well-being of the whole person. Through spiritual counseling and activities, patients realize that addiction compromises the quality of their relationships and daily life.
How Does Spirituality Help in Recovery?
Growing research suggests that spiritual practices don’t just help people find purpose and meaning in their lives — they can measurably improve physical health, mental health, and overall well-being.
Regular spiritual practice can:
- Increase compassion and mindfulness. Contemplative practices, like meditation, gratitude, devotional rituals, and yoga, offer a profound understanding of oneself and others. These practices can also help you learn to enjoy and reflect on the minute pleasures life has to offer.
- Improve your sense of connectedness: Spiritual communities, such as churches, meditation groups, and even yoga classes, provide opportunities to connect with people, creating a sense of belonging, security, and community. Since your spiritual community is made up of people who share similar values, it offers the opportunity to build strong and meaningful friendships. This not only improves one’s mental state, but it can increase physical health as well.
- Guide you to live a healthier life: Many spiritual traditions hold the notion that the body should be treated with respect and kindness. This can include avoiding potentially harmful behavior, for instance, avoiding certain foods, excessive drinking, or smoking. By connecting these practices to a larger spiritual meaning, you are more likely to make healthy choices and stick to them.
- Inspire you to work through negative emotions: Numerous spiritual traditions suggest letting go of negative emotions such as anger, blame, frustration, and jealousy. These feelings are inevitable, but they can negatively impact your mood and overall health. Being able to manage them can provide you with benefits mentally and physically as well. As a result of lowered negative emotions, people live longer, have improved immune functions, have lower blood pressure, and have healthier cardiovascular systems.
- Help you overcome hardships: A spiritual framework enables you to understand and cope with the ups and downs of life, and to find meaning and growth within them. Understanding the universality of suffering and pain allows one to recognize that hardships are part of one’s human experience.
