Psychoneuroimmunology (PNI) 101

Psychoneuroimmunology (PNI) is the study of how the brain, nervous system, and immune system impact each other. Researchers are beginning to discover ways in which the central nervous system and immune system communicate with each other, and these findings are the basis of PNI. PNI offers an interdisciplinary approach to disease, taking into account psychology, genetics, endocrinology, biology, and neuroscience when looking at health conditions within the human body.

A practitioner using a PNI approach may note that when a patient’s nervous system experiences stress, their bodies become inflamed and more susceptible to disease. Inflammation in the body can also lead to depression, heart disease, and even cancer. When healthcare professionals treat complications like these from a PNI perspective, they can find wellness solutions to complex health problems.

What does PNI have to do with addiction?

PNI shows potential for treating addiction, as well as co-occurring mental health problems, such as depression and anxiety. This means that it can serve as an effective piece of a larger treatment plan. PNI, like many other holistic practices, operates under the pretense that you can never truly rid yourself of stress, but you can alter your stress response. By changing our stress responses, we can decrease inflammation and our susceptibility to certain mental and physical health issues. Incorporating a PNI approach into a treatment plan may help improve a patient’s quality of life and their long-term success.
