Not a Glum Lot

May 1, 2019

by Kellye DeBerry, Alumni Coordinator, Hanley Center

When I came into the rooms of the 12-Step program, I played a scene in my head of how I pictured my life from that point on.

And I imagined my life looking a lot like what is portrayed on TV and in movies. I pictured going to meetings in a dimly lit basement, filled with ten folding chairs arranged in a circle. I thought I’d be surrounded by miserable and hopeless people talking about how much of a struggle each and every day was trying not to drink and use. I thought I would be fighting the obsession and urge to drink on a daily basis, run to a meeting, and possibly feel worse and filled with less hope after I left. If that’s how bleak my life was going to be without alcohol, I didn’t want any part of it.  Thank God this picture couldn’t be farther from the truth.

“We (alcoholics) aren’t a glum lot.” – Big Book, p. 132

I believe that truer words have never been written about us. When I walk into the rooms of the Fellowship, I’m greeted with smiles, love, and lots of laughter every time without fail. In fact, oftentimes I can hear the excitement going on before walking in the room! It’s so important for the newcomer to understand that just because we are no longer drinking doesn’t mean that we don’t enjoy life.

“If newcomers could see no joy or fun in our existence, they wouldn’t want it. We absolutely insist on enjoying life.” – BB p. 132

I once thought attending 12-Step meetings would be a dreaded obligation, but now it’s something I actually look forward to. I have an opportunity to get together with people that are somehow completely different from but also just like me. We are from all walks of life, but share a common problem and a common solution.
