Jay K. Meldman, ICADC, CAC – Admissions Specialist
Jay Meldman grew up in Chicago, Illinois where he attended Loyola Academy until his graduation in 2006. He moved to Austin, Texas with his father and attended school at the University of Texas in San Antonio. Following his own personal struggle with alcoholism, Jay moved to the Texas Hill Country in 2010 where he met a group of men who set him on the road to permanent recovery. Since then Jay has been active in the recovery community and continues to learn about the treatment industry. Jay came to work for Origins in early 2015 as the Transitions Coordinator in West Palm Beach and moved into the Admissions Department in August of 2015.
What brought you to Origins?
I had been working in the Texas Hill Country, but I had the desire to move into the treatment industry. Many people I respected worked for Origins so I contacted a friend about any possible positions. Origins asked if I was willing to relocate to South Florida and be a part of the transition at the Hanley Center. Having spent many winters visiting and having family here made it an easy decision. It is truly paradise.
What keeps you at Origins?
The people keep me here. Working in this industry can be difficult at times. At Origins, I feel as if I am working with the best and the brightest. I continue to learn more and more every day from those around me. I have grown close with many of my colleagues, and I could not envision working at any other company in this business. A few of us have a standing tee time for golf every weekend!
Do you hold any credentials or certifications, or do you participate in any other professional activities outside of work?
This last year I obtained my Certified Addiction Counselor (CAC) and my Internationally Certified Alcohol and Drug Counselor (ICADC) credentials through the Florida Certification Board. This had been a goal of mine, and with the support of co-workers, I was able to obtain the credentials. I plan to have my Certified Addiction Professional certification by the end of 2017.
Are you in recovery yourself? If so, what do you love most about being in recovery?
My sobriety date is November 18, 2010. Throughout this time I have been able to go all around this great country of ours and visit with men and women from all walks of life in recovery. The thing I love most about recovery is that if I continue to give my spare time to fellow sufferers, I am given the coolest life. I can literally do anything I want at any time. That is not a feeling I ever enjoyed in the past.
What do you enjoy doing in your spare time?
Traveling has always been one of my favorite things. As a young man I am able to go on many quick trips and explore new places with relative ease. I recently went to NYC for a weekend and had the best time just wandering around and meeting new people. I also have a big golf trip planned with my father in May.
