Cara O’Neill, MS., MCAP, RMHCI | Corporate Director of Alumni Services
As we all know, 2020 has been a year we will never forget.
There have been many tough times, and the pandemic has caused untold hardships and many changes. Here at Origins, one of those was the Reunion. When we could not have the Reunion in our traditional fashion, it hit us hard. We love seeing our alumni, and watching them thrive is the joy of my work.
We had to adjust and adapt.
We brought the team together and started formulating a plan of action to hold it virtually. We initially had a lot of uncertainty regarding how it would all work, but this didn’t stop us. Our Reunion is always a divinely inspired event, and we knew we would somehow make it work.
We had a ton of meetings, texts, emails, and phone calls. We hosted trial runs and spent days fixing mistakes. We kept pushing because on the other side of all the planning were our alumni. They were excited. They wanted to connect, and we desperately wanted to see them, too. This desire was our fuel.
Then, a massive, freezing winter storm hit.
It wiped out entire areas of Texas, including water and heat. Our friends were cold and suffering. Some were stuck in airports. It was chaotic and awful. My first thought was, “Wait, this is Reunion prep-week.”
Luckily for us, we had over-prepared. This planning got us through, and the Florida team was ready to run things without Texas if needed. However, our Texas team never gave up hope and were all present for the Reunion. Some hadn’t showered in days. Some had traveled hundreds of miles in an Uber to get home, but they were there.
The moral of the story is that we can persevere. With the help of our Higher Power, we can thrive even in the most challenging times.
So, thank you. Thank you to everyone who helped with our Reunion, and thanks to the most extraordinary alumni in the country. You made us laugh, you made us cry, but most of all, you inspired us. I will never forget this Reunion!
