Cocaine Addiction
[Note: this section is addressed to the loved ones of powder cocaine addicts (whether it is snorted, freebased, swallowed or injected) and while there are of course distinct similarities between powder cocaine addicts and crack addicts, we have created a separate section for crack addiction [link].]
Origins Recovery Centers are uniquely qualified in their ability to combat the destruction cocaine has done within the lives of our clients. Your loved one will be well served in spending time in our facility in pursuit of freedom from this horrible drug.
As of this writing, Cocaine is the most abused stimulant in the United States and this does not seem to be declining in any way. Overdosing on cocaine is not a difficult thing to do and it occurs with tragic frequency among heavy cocaine users. Your loved one puts their central nervous system, especially the heart, under substantial stress whenever they use cocaine. If they were to take their blood pressure while in the midst of a cocaine binge, they would notice that their pressure holds constant at near stroke levels of elevation.
If your loved one is like many of the individuals who seek help at Origins, they may be operating under the delusion that cocaine is actually relatively innocuous if they keep the amount they use and the frequency with which they use it under a certain, arbitrary amount. We would like to be very clear on this matter: there is absolutely no “safe” way to do cocaine and there is no acceptable amount of cocaine for a person to do. It has been well documented that long-term cocaine users who never succumb to overdose generally end up shortening their lives considerably (10+ years) due to the overall stress the drug puts on the body.
As a cocaine addict, your loved one is quite likely to be of the “I can quit whenever I want” sort of addicts. This is often due to the fact that since Cocaine lacks any true, physical withdrawal symptoms (like that experienced by alcoholics or heroin addicts), the addict is able to convince themselves that they are still able to exert a degree of control over their addiction. This is of course almost always a falsehood, as you are probably all too aware.
Moreover, for what cocaine addiction lacks in physical withdrawal symptoms, it more than makes up for in utterly terrifying psychological withdrawal symptoms. When your loved one is without cocaine, their mind literally obsesses over the drug to a crazed extent, which as you know, always drives them to pick up more cocaine.
This aspect of the disease of cocaine addiction is what we call the “mental obsession” and learning about the nature of this is key within our curriculum of recovery for cocaine addicts at Origins Recovery Centers.
