Polysubstance Abuse
It is quite common that we at Origins Recovery Centers encounter individuals who are addicted to multiple substances or “polysubstance” abusers as is the industry term for such unfortunate individuals. In entrusting us to treat your loved one’s polysubstance abuse, you are enlisting the help of caring staff quite familiar with the proper treatment protocols in working with those with multiple drugs of choice.
We would like to first define what we consider polysubstance abuse to be. Often, clinicians will only classify your loved one as a polysubstance abuser in the even they have abused three or more mood altering substances during the course of the past year, however we generally use a much simpler definition. We think that your loved one’s addiction is accurately classified as of the “polysubstance” sort if they have difficulty in defining a singular, prominent and foundational drug of choice and if they have fund that they abuse multiple substances equally.
Quite often, your loved one’s polysubstance abuse can be the evolution of an original, single form of drug abuse. For instance, we see a lot of stimulant addicts (cocaine, meth, etc.) who begin to use things like Marijuana to allow them to eat (since stimulants suppress appetite) and alcohol for its sedating properties in order to allow them to sleep (since stimulants keep you awake). In time, however, the polysubstance abuser begins to indulge in all three with equal fervor and, in time, it all becomes a horrible cacophony of reliance upon multiple deadly substances.
In fact, it is not uncommon for many of our clients to present to our facilities with several drugs of choice and we want you to know that your loved one’s polysubstance abuse issues are nothing foreign to us and we are quite adept at tackling the addiction of such individuals.
