“Why can’t I stop?”
We have all asked this question. Some told us we would stop “if we really wanted to.” How far that was from the truth! Even when we honestly wanted to quit, we found it impossible. Not desire, necessity, a judge’s orders, not even our child’s love was enough to do the job. “If you would just not drink and drug, then you would be better”, they would tell us. So we tried that. We would detox, putting some distance between us and the dope and booze, believing the drink and the drug were the problem. They weren’t. It turns out, we felt even worse when sober! Not drinking and not drugging did NOT fix what was wrong with us because abstinence left us without the one thing (drink/drug) we were using to get “OK”. Though we acted like it, we really weren’t “partying” anymore - that had ended long ago for us. We were getting loaded to get comfortable in our skin, even if only for a few precious minutes or hours. We couldn’t live with it, because it was killing us, and couldn’t live without it, because it hurt too badly. So, here’s our truth. If we were going to set down the booze and the dope, we had to replace it with something powerful. If we were to stay sober, we needed a reliable way to be truly OK inside…we needed a way to live free. Do you want to be free? Welcome to Origins.
